DC Law Firm Helps Ease School Spending

Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo, P.C., chose to donate their unneeded furniture to a local elementary school instead of doing the easy thing: throw it away.
Washington, D.C. (BizHWY) March 29, 2010 - Several public schools in the DC area are contending with budget cuts which often result in laying off teachers, increasing class sizes and reducing special education courses. Updated and additional furniture for classes and school administration offices is considered a luxury. Many dedicated teachers use their own money to pay for supplemental classroom supplies. Recently, the Washington, DC law firm, Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo, P.C. donated several pieces of furniture they no longer needed to Beall Elementary School in Rockville, MD.

Lori Sokolowski, the Administrative Secretary for Beall Elementary School described the situation at Beall Elementary, "Our desks were over 20 years old. Teachers were thrilled to receive new desks and furniture for their classrooms. Many of the desks were rusty and the new portables did not include teacher furniture or bookcases."

"Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky & Popeo, P.C. was dedicated to do more with their unused items than just add them to a landfill while a school and staff could benefit from the items" said Gregory Korthase, President of Etreev. Using Etreev's services, Hope Hodges, a Williams Lea Site Manager for the law firm, has orchestrated donations of over 6 tons of reusable materials in the last year. Because of this, it is estimated that over 15 metric tons of greenhouse gases have been eliminated.

"Putting office equipment and furniture that the firm no longer needed to such great use was a no-brainer for us," said Susan Berson, Managing Member of the firm's Washington, D.C. office. "We're grateful to Etreev for making it so easy to donate these items to the Beall school."
